CONTENT

Since November 2013 Ives Maes is working on a new series of works about his heimat village Zonhoven. This photographic document entitled SUNVILLE, a popular translation of the village’s name into English, came to an end in March 2015 during a partial solar eclipse in the area. Since that moment he is formalizing the photographic documents into photosculptures and photographic installations. At the end of his two months residency at “Villa Van Wassenhove”, a residency project by Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Ives Maes is presenting some of these new works for the first time. The title of the exhibition “Ab Hier Ist Schluss Mit Lustig” comes from a proverb the artist encountered on his first photographic excursion to his hometown.

PROJECT

SUNVILLE is the English translation of the name of Ives Maes’ native village Zonhoven in Belgium. The photographic series is a personal quest into his memories around specific locations in his hometown. On another level this series is a part of his PhD in the arts research at KASK School of Arts / UGent concerning the physical, sculptural and architectural aspects of photography.
